words: belch

Hereford based Synthetic Epiphany (a.k.a. Marcus Levy-Chance) is certainly one of the relatively few emerging ‘future garage’ creators who manages to cut through the vast wash of Burial tribute acts who dominate endless soundcloud pages. His slick production style and well-crafted percussion particularly caught my attention at first, and recent collaborations with CoMa, the beautifully dark and unique female vocal talent from Kent, certainly bode well for things to come. With a debut EP on Edinburgh-based label Seeking Blue in the pipeline (entitled ‘Beauty In Errors’) - we have this track to give you, a remix which features on Coma’s ‘May All The Bridges I Burn Light My Way’ EP. Listen and download after the jump.

An etherial 2 step take on Coma’s track, ‘Where Do We Go’ (deep Thom Yorke vibes on the original) - the whimsical piano melody and tasteful digitisation of the layered vocals float on top of a solid 2 step riddim - rendering this the perfect after hours track whilst you still have enough energy to bounce around the darkened living room.

Nice one. Watch this space for forthcoming release info and listen out for other hints of Synthetic Epiphany in future BB radio shows and sets. Go and download the rest of the EP at CoMa’s soundcloud.

words: belch | label: text records

Always keen for anything new from long time favourite London experimentalist Four Tet (known to his mum as Kieran Hebden) - and especially after ‘Nova’ a few months back, his latest collaboration with fellow boundary-breaker Burial - this new offering, the A side to the new 12” on his Text Records imprint entitled “Jupiters/Ocoras”, most certainly does not disappoint. Continue reading for more thoughts and a listen.

The first section, with it’s brash synthesis and building layers, really throws the listener off as the dark and minimal 2-step drop comes along. The abrupt changeover didn’t make much sense to me at first, and the beat seemed lacking in atmosphere… But then, the opening hook is craftily fed on top of the beat, and everything falls a bit more into place.

Nothing hugely groundbreaking, and dangerously reminiscent of Burial - nonetheless I think this one could be a grower, and it most definitely doesn’t feel out of place in the long line of highly successful yet understated releases put out on Text over the last couple of years.

words: belch | photography: TheArtificialAsylum

In the past few months, following the news of Cab Vol’s ‘rennovation’ and the imminent forced relocation of the Bongo Club, many of Edinburgh’s staunch night time music lovers undoubtedly began to feel a little disarmed by the prospect of our coveted scene’s potential downfall.

However things are looking decidedly positive, while the former’s relaunch is going ahead this week (kicking off a surprisingly exciting and varied month of acts - Alex Metric and Blawan being particular highlights), and the city’s more discerning club-goers are beginning to discover a new hidden gem of a venue to pop up - in the form of The Annexe. And discover it they certainly did last night at the second 49hz party, where BB favourite Mosca tore the roof off in true style.

The venue - which also plays host to weekly Thursday bass party, Zzzap - was stylishly tagged with the 49hz logo and garnished with mix-cd’s aplenty, dangling from balloons. On arrival, resident and local bass music aficionado Paranoise and fellow resident Skanky B provided some heavy vibes to kick off proceedings, with Silvertongue on hype duties - and much to my deep satisfaction the sound system (which had on previous visits felt disappointingly weak) was carrying the music to perfection.

Mosca kicked off his set with some deep downtempo house vibes, slotting in sleazy new number ‘Eva Mendes’ (forthcoming on Hypercolour), and gradually built the energy up through some UKG, unsurprisingly dropping ‘Bax’ which received a well-deserved pull up - then really got into his element when the dancehall crept in. His final tune, the much coveted Jungle VIP of ‘Tilt Shift’ (only ever to be heard live) fully deserved my £6 door tax alone.

An unquestionably contented crowd left the building - and Edinburgh’s fresh 49hz brand smashed it once again. Coupled with last nights announcement of the Dimensions Launch Party to be hosted by these guys on the 1st June - I think it is safe to say, faith in our city’s music scene has been fully restored.

Oh and I think the big guy was pretty happy too…

The second über exclusive and limited vinyl only offering from the pair’s SunkLo imprint - brings yet more driving percussive textures, continuing to mould their own distinct mark on ever emerging UK techno scene.

Following the immediate success of their debut release on this imprint “Froth / Mercy” back in February (not to mention one of the top tracks of this year - the brilliant Swims on Swamp 81) ”Dun Dun / Prone” should be in shops by the end of the week. No doubt it’ll get snapped up very quickly, so keep your eyes peeled - you certainly don’t want to sleep on this one.

A big slinky deep house tune from Bicep, which I very nearly slept on. Managed to cop one of the very limited vinyl only pressings which almost instantly topped the Juno chart upon release. Love fever seems like an interesting new label which has been running some very sexy underground parties around London for a while now - if this release is anything to go by, I’m very much looking forward to more good things to come. Have a listen after the jump.

Although our last post was a TreeFNGR tune from a couple of weeks back (it’s been sat in the outbox whilst studies have taken over) - here is the brand new tune dropped on the soundcloud today. Known to me as ‘Klut (1st Demo)’ since I’ve been playing it in my sets - but apparently rebranded as ‘I’m TreeFNGR’ - this one, with it’s hypnotic vocal samples and more gully vibes on the beat, certainly provides a solid introduction into the mind of the anonymous producer (or producers?).

Download it, get it in your life yeh.

words: belch

Elusive and anonymous producer TreeFNGR has offered up a second free tune, titled ‘Five Ticks’. Carefully chopped vocals and burial-esque vinyl crackles placed alongside atmospheric synthesis, leading to an unexpectedly phat bassline - we’re not particularly keen on futile permutations of genre names, and this is certainly a prime example of why - drawing heavily on dubstep and UKG, but underlaid with a decisive house beat.

Listen and download below - and keep an eye on TreeFNGR - big tings a gwaan.

words: belch | label: night slugs

With Club Constructions Vol. 1 only just released by label executive L-Vis 1990, and Classical Curves, the much anticipated debut full length LP from Jam City finally being set to drop May 26 - Night Slugs would appear to have a more than satisfactory amount on their plate at the moment. But of course, in the vein of their cracking form thus far in 2012, they aren’t prepared to stop there. Bok Bok (known to his mum as Alex Sushon) - the other head honcho down at Night Slugs (and the one in charge of the design) - has brought the first in a new line of free mixtapes put together by members of the Slugs crew. More details, download and tracklist after the jump.

The mixes will form “An in-house platform that will allow the key DJs in the camp to open up their collections and showcase their individual styles” according to the release on their site, and will act as a “manifesto” for each DJ. I like this vibe a lot.

Nothing need to be said of the mixtape itself, other than the fact that it is obviously brilliant - and serves fittingly well as Bok Bok’s own manifesto - full of unreleased NS material and a touch of solid roots.
words: belch | label: diamond & raw

Edinburgh based label Diamond & Raw first caught our attention when we boogied down to their showcase at Coalition back in early March. Equipped with a high calibre soundcloud, carefully chosen roster and a couple of banging showcase mixes - there were no surprises when head honcho Adam Rowley smashed it at Sneaky Petes. Now, their debut release from Bristol based trio, Forget Me Not, is set to drop at the end of this month - and you can have a listen to the whole thing and see what we have to say about it after the jump.

‘What Were You Gonna Say’ is an atmospheric offering, packed full of sparkly synthesis and building basslines - not to mention the bouncy underlying percussion. The highlight of this track is undoubtedly provided by The Boxettes vocalist Neo, who brings a nostalgic R&B feel to the whole thing.

For most new labels’ debut release, that would be more than enough to seal the deal. But not with these guys. The Auntie Flo remix brings an entirely different vibe to the table - veering very much towards breaks, the bubbly synths and chopped vocals giving it a decidedly darker feel overall. This remix in particular has recently had well deserved support from Sinden on his Kiss FM show.

I have to say my personal favourite part of the release features young and swiftly up and coming belgian producer and DJ, Gullfisk remix duties. Keeping the original very much in mind, this one flawlessly grows from atmospheric R&S-esque vibes (with well placed ‘rainfall on the roof’ samping - big up!) to one of those appropriately genre-bending ‘bass’ tracks, with a syncapated bassline-kick drum combo, and subtly building layers of atmospheric synthesis on top. I love that the vocal has been sliced up and placed back on an ever-so-slightly different beat, which gives a fresh feel to Neo’s song (and without chopping too heavily.)

Available for purchase digitally on the release date - I very much hope we see some wax from this exciting Edinburgh based outfit before too long!

Night Slugs is one of only a few labels to have relentlessly pounded out high quality music without fail. My favourite part of the output is undoubtedly the flawless white label series, which has brought forth some real classics (Jam City - Ecstasy Refix and more recently Helix - Drum Track). It filled many avid Slugs fans with excitement to hear that one of the labels honchos, L-Vis 1990, was bringing us yet another ‘series’ to get our teeth into. Full details and even a preview after the jump.

‘Club Constructions Vol 1’ is the first in a new line of releases which are “aimed straight at the dancefloor”. Exclusively made with analog hardware, these “modern day ghetto and hard house” bangers bode too well for what is in store.

Have a listen to clips of the whole release below, before it drops on April 16th.

words: belch

LuckyMe’s own Glaswegian super producer/master DJ, Rustie, smashed it big style in his lethal Essential Mix for Radio 1 on Friday. Download and tracklist after the jump.

2 hours of predominantly new and unreleased LuckyMe material from himself, TNGHT, The Blessings and Obey City - and some quality US hip hop to boot - this is definitely one of those mixes to get in your life.

More than anything else, this mix showcases the brilliant things to come from the Glasgow mandem - too much excitement. If you haven’t already checked out TNGHT, check this article here, and this one here.
Just so damn exciting… video speaks for itself.

In terms of legendary team-ups, Glaswegian DJ Hudson Mohawke and Canadian livewire Lunice could be the Batman and Robin of the rap / trap genre. Get a glimpse of performance madness and a multi-dimensional letterset, and dance your cans off, all in under two minutes.

I always admire the fact that the boys at Hessle Audio are so understated about their new releases - they sneak up on you, and they’re always top class. Details and preview after the jump.

The new bit from Elgato, who was responsible for the beautiful and unique ‘Tonight / Blue’ on the label two years back, definitely won’t be unfamiliar to you if you are a fan of Ben UFO’s sets and mixtapes (the A side ‘Zone’ kicked off his latest podcast for LWE - which you need to check out with accompanying interview if you havent already).

words: joss pritchard | label: XL recordings

It has been almost a year since the release of elusive London based producer Jai Paul’s sublime track ‘BTSTU’ (on XL Recordings), and almost five years since the demo for this debut track first emerged only gaining widespread coverage in 2010, from the likes of Zane Lowe and Giles Peterson among others. The long-awaited follow up, and only the second release from Jai Paul, does not disappoint. Stream the whole thing after the jump.

‘Jasmine (demo)’, which dropped on Paul’s soundcloud last night, is a beautiful track immersed in warped synths and funky guitar licks, which compliment the muffled vocal line throughout. With rolling percussion and brutal sub bass laid beneath, this certainly bodes well for anything else the incognito songwriter from Rayners Lane might have up his sleeve.

Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another 5 years to hear the next release from this very talented producer.

TNGHT, the epic HudMo X Lunice collab we are all excited for very big things from, have finally been releasing some tidbits from their work together. And Mirrors, another glaswegian up and comer yet to inevitably dent the scene with his sounds, has served up a phat remix of their new leak, Unknown. Lots of youtube tnght hype and a cheeky download of the remix after the jump.

A huge offering from the duo, in true unique style as we have come to expect from the two - Bugg’N blends their respective avante garde hip hop vibes. This, the first TNGHT track to surface, has a tongue in cheek feel with a solid beat underlying the cheeky vocal sampling and interspersed with gangsta vibin water drops. This one’s been getting hyped for some time now by the likes of Rustie and even Zane Lowe.

My favourite by far, ripped from the end of Rustie’s Boiler Room session - what sounds like a rework of Thunder Bay, but with a swagful beat underneath - I certainly can’t wait to hear more of this. For now, get Mirrors’ take on this in your life. Glasgow-based Christopher McFarlane has been building up a most reputable soundcloud over only the last few months - and is definitely one to watch (with a daring and most successful take on Blawan’s ‘Getting Me Down’, and a solid refix of Whitney Houston’s ‘It’s Not Right’) - listen to his remix of unknown, and download below.

Anonymous bass outfit ∆kkord, self professed “collective of like-minded artists raised in and around the rural outskirts of Manchester”, act as both a record label and a murderous production team. They only very recently hit our radar, when they dropped the exciting first digital release, ∆kkord001, at the back end of last month. With the limited run of the 12” on beautiful hand-stamped white vinyl (released on the 5th March) already gone, we’re very excited for the next instalment. Preview their sound and download the free track “Submerged”, which has featured heavily in my sets of late and we played in BB#6 on Friday - after the jump.

This week Belch and Ay Gee go back to back again, spinning vinyl in the Fresh Air studio. Stream and download, complete with full tracklist (and even some photos in the studio!) after the jump.

Packed in our 2 hour show is some brand new Pearson Sound (‘Footloose’ vinyl only release), the fresh sounding Helix, on the Night Slugs white label (came through the post on Friday!) and an exclusive chat with Sega Bodega, Glasgow’s up and coming super producer, when the Buff Basslines Crew caught up with him at Zzzap! on Thursday.

Download here, or stream (with tracklist) below.
