beatthepulp launch at the Convenience Store

last night i had the pleasure of attending the launch of beatthepulp, a new project by designer and illustrator Kulvinder Dhillon, describing herself thusly:

“a series of illustrations, clean and dirty with precision and roughness, childishness or sexual, simplistic yet complex. Mark making with heavy pencil on paper, the starkness on the monochrome drawings are used to hallmark the work. The slight imperfections add to the bleeding blacks on white to create patches of grey fuzz with random shots of colour. A story lies in every image. Also thrown in for good measure are collections of experimental graphic colour work based on movie posters and book covers revisited”

very cool stuff. and managed to finally make my debut visit to the convenience store, brainchild of Andrew Ibi the shopkeeper. a really interesting shop embedded under a council block in islington. no pretence or conceptual motive behind this, purely a great space for new designers to showcase their work - i’d definitely recommend a visit if you’re in the area.
